Cassette options for Dura Ace 7700 SS rear mech with compact

Retro Classic Road Forum | Retrobike - www.retrobike.co.uk
Hi folks,

I'm building a bike for my gf using a Dura Ace 7700 groupset that's been gathering dust for a while. The frame is a Cannondale SuperSix with many Cannondale SI parts including the carbon compact crankset. So it's going to be a pretty sweet bike finally.

My question is, what's the largest rear cog I can use with the 7700 SS rear mech with a 50-34 front pairing? The tech specs quote 26T total spread, with 11-27 max cassette range and 14T chainring range, which is conservative and race-oriented. In principle that means it 'shouldn't work' with a compact crank and most cassettes, but I previously used it with a 12-27 cassette and 50-34 rings with no problems.

I was wondering if I could get away with using a 12-30 (maybe 13-30?) cassette with the 50-34 rings. What combinations have people successfully used in the past with an SS rear mech?

Cheers,

Gareth.
