GL650 interstate in Seattle

Selling and Buying Forum - cx500forum.com
40,000 miles. Burgundy. Needs quadruple bypass and I don’t have the time before I head east. It must therefore depart. Located in Seattle.

So my friend scored me the bike, sight unseen, not running, and I reimbursed him the cost. Bike is complete with bags, fairing, etc. PO had started to “refinish” the rear bags. Seat has a duck tape repair. Bike cleaned up nicely. After cleaning the kill switch, installing starter relay/solenoid and cleaning the carbs, I installed a new battery and it turned so slowly that I rebuilt the starter and did the internal ground mod. Reinstalled the starter and it turned quickly. Did a once-over clean/degrease, put in new fuel, changed oil, bled brakes with new fluid, adjusted rear brake, greased drive and, VOILA, it started, albeit slowly, eventually smoothing out. Didn’t want to idle so I bought complete kit and installed new (stock) jets and adjusted them; it idles, though at about 1700 RPM. Bigger issue is apparently the dreaded starter clutch/springs. The beast will start when cold, with a put-put-putput-putputput-growl to life, and runs smoothly, but once warm, the starter won’t hold on long enough to help the engine fire to life. Let it cool and it will get it going again. So I’m told that it needs surgical intervention which, while I’m inside, means doing the rest of it. The main seal is leaking oil, I’m sure that the stator needs replacement, which is why no instant firing. Basically it needs the quadruple bypass, which means two days’ work. That isn’t the timing issue, but rather gathering the entire set of parts, gaskets, o-rings, etc. required to do the job, probably a two to three week turnaround, by which time I'll be gone. Having spent a bit of time on this board in the last few weeks, this is the place where someone who has already done it could do so and with $200 in parts can have a complete running bike. The only other thing it will definitely need is tires. Both dry-rotted and while the front holds air, the back needs re-upping every couple of days; I wouldn’t trust them. Clutch engages fine. I’ll do my best to post some pics. As of now, the bike has cost me $960.00 and if I can see anything like that, I’ll be a happy camper and the buyer will have a pretty good deal as well. The parts, were one inclined to dismantle, could well exceed that but I’m thinking that it could be a great rider with a bit of time and skill. OK, so that is pretty much all I know and while you are welcomed to email or text/call, I don’t know much more than that. I’m working on a timeline so the “no reasonable offer refused” applies-really. Email is justice4hobos [at ] gmail [dot] com. Text before calling: eight six two, three two four, zero zero two eight. Thanks, all.
