Porsche - 1981 924 Weissach

Porsche Cars For Sale - Pelican Parts Technical BBS - forums.pelicanparts.com
Hey all,

I really REALLY wanted to keep this car for longer and learn to drive and appreciate it, but a deal of a lifetime has come up on another vehicle (1966 Karmann Ghia) that has been on my bucket list for far longer, and my wife says can't keep both... So, I'd like to give y'all a chance to own a really nice example of a limited trim 924. I am located in Rockford, IL.

The car is a 1981, as stated in the title, with approximately 48k on the odometer. No rust; everything looks pretty clean and original all over. Trouble is I have no records... The car came to me 6 months ago with no information other than a clean carfax. There was no owners manual even. That said, the dash is cracked (aren't they all?) and the steering wheel needs to be resewn (not a full rewrap, as the leather has not split or anything, just disintegrated thread over time it seems). The passenger window also does not roll down. It has a crappy aftermarket late 90s early 00s cd player. Aside from that one thing it appears completely original.

Unfortunately with regards to the options sticker, there is none! In the early 80s from what I can tell sometimes they got placed under the hood, sometimes in the spare tire well, and sometimes only in the owners book. Fortunately these things can be ordered from Porsche, so that's one more thing I would do if I kept it. I have been told by upstanding members in the 924 community that this indeed is a Weissach Edition, based on the apparent options (paint, wheels, interior, etc). If anyone wants the VIN just ask and I'll send a PM with that. ??

Since owning it, I have replaced the battery hold down (was using a metal strap to tie it down when I bought it), replaced the driver's door stop bracket (split), and the alternator bushings (it had stopped charging, entirely... bushings were completely shot). I did not replace the lower bracket rubber bushing that mounts to the block, as the existing one was in good shape. That part will be included with the sale of the car for the future owner. I replaced the hatch lock cylinder grommet as well. The oil has been changed with Mobil 1 0W-40 and a new Bosch filter. I also changed the air filter.

I received new Zimmerman front rotors and improperly sized pads (maybe for a 5-lug car?) with the vehicle, as the previous owner claimed he was going to replace them. Since this is a hub-in-rotor design I'm guessing he lost interest or gave up when he couldn't find the proper parts. For as long as I have the vehicle I'm going to continue to do maintenance at the pace I am able (adjusting the price accordingly), so if I get around to ordering the wheel bearing seals I will change the front brakes for the next owner, otherwise the parts I have will come with it. I have rear brake shoes as well, and the drums themselves look to be in decent shape. I am investigating and working on the passenger window as well -- I have a couple parts on order for that already. I also intend to get a quote from a local upholstery shop for the wheel resew, so the next owner has a ballpark of what that'd cost.

In the interest of full disclosure, if I were keeping it, I would also plan to replace the positive battery harness eventually, it's fraying at the top. That said, it seems to be working/charging just fine. I also would be looking at replacing the struts, as they feel a bit squishy. If they're original, that wouldn't surprise me. I'd also take care of the rest of the stuff mentioned as well, but that's really about it!

Will come with a Haynes manual. It also has the original sunroof bag and full toolkit.

As is though, it's a solid rust free driver looking to be cared for by someone else. Help me find it a good home!

Pictures including a video of it running. Also to add to the "things I would fix if I kept it" list would be that nasty crumbling hood blanket. Sorry it's so dirty in the pictures -- been in the garage all winter and I hadn't had a chance to clean it yet when I took them. It could use a full detail. Alternator air cowl and tube not shown because I needed to reinstall them (just did alternator bushings) when the pictures were taken.

If anyone else has picture requests or would like any more information, please let me know and I'll try to accommodate. Thanks!
